Tips & Notes
Pro tips
Dissolve powdered sugar thoroughly in a small amount of warm water or spirits before mixing to avoid grittiness.
Add carbonated water last and gently to maintain fizz; stir lightly to combine.
Chill all ingredients before mixing to prevent excessive dilution from melting ice.
Use fresh carbonated water rather than flat or stale soda for optimal flavor and texture.
Substitutions
Old Mr. Boston Five Star Brandy → Cognac or other quality brandy (will increase cost and alter flavor complexity)
Triple Sec → Cointreau or Grand Marnier (Cointreau is drier; Grand Marnier adds oak notes)
Curaçao → Additional triple sec or orange bitters (reduces sweetness)
Powdered Sugar → Simple syrup, 1/2 oz (easier to incorporate, slightly less texture)
Storage & make-ahead
Serve immediately after preparation. Pre-batch the brandy, liqueurs, and sugar without carbonated water; refrigerate up to 2 hours, then add carbonated water before serving.
Common Questions
Can I make a Sauterne Cup without triple sec?
Yes, use an equal measure of orange liqueur or additional curaçao, though this will shift the flavor profile slightly toward orange.
Should Sauterne Cup be served hot or cold?
Sauterne Cup is traditionally served chilled, typically over ice in a wine glass or punch bowl.
What type of brandy works best?
Use a quality brandy like Old Mr. Boston Five Star or similar; avoid overly aged or premium brandies that would be wasted in a mixed drink.
Can I batch this for a party?
Yes, multiply all ingredients except carbonated water, chill, then add carbonated water just before serving to preserve carbonation.
What is the difference between triple sec and curaçao?
Both are orange liqueurs; curaçao is typically sweeter with deeper color, while triple sec is drier and more neutral—both work in this recipe.
