Tips & Notes
Pro tips
Dissolve the powdered sugar completely in a small amount of brandy or water before adding other ingredients to avoid grittiness.
Add carbonated water last and stir gently to preserve carbonation and prevent the drink from going flat.
Chill your glassware beforehand and serve immediately after mixing for optimal refreshment.
Use fresh carbonated water rather than flat soda water to maintain the cocktail's signature effervescence.
Substitutions
Old Mr. Boston Triple Sec → Cointreau (premium alternative with more complex citrus)
Old Mr. Boston Curaçao → Grand Marnier (adds orange depth, slightly sweeter)
Powdered Sugar → Simple Syrup, 1/2 oz (easier to mix, consistent sweetness)
Storage & make-ahead
Sauterne Cup is best served fresh immediately after mixing. Pre-mixed spirits can be stored in a cool, dark place for several weeks, but carbonated water must be added just before serving.
Common Questions
Can I make a large batch of Sauterne Cup ahead of time?
Mix the brandy, triple sec, and curaçao in advance, but add carbonated water and powdered sugar just before serving to maintain carbonation and prevent over-dilution.
What type of glassware should I use for a Sauterne Cup?
Serve in a wine glass or punch cup over ice to showcase the drink's light color and allow room for the carbonated water.
Can I substitute the liqueurs in this recipe?
Triple sec can be replaced with Cointreau; curaçao can swap for Grand Marnier, though this will alter the flavor profile slightly.
Is powdered sugar necessary, or can I use simple syrup?
Simple syrup works as a substitute—use 1/2 oz instead of 4 tsp powdered sugar for easier mixing and consistent sweetness.
