Pour water into a small saucepan and bring to a rolling boil over high heat.
While the water heats up, add butter and brown sugar to a separate skillet.
Add soy sauce, minced garlic, and crushed red pepper flakes to the skillet with the butter and sugar.
Once the water is boiling, add the block of ramen noodles. Cook for 10-12 minutes for softer noodles, or to your desired doneness.
While the noodles cook, heat the sauce ingredients in the skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the butter melts and sugar dissolves. This should take about 3 minutes.
When the noodles are cooked, drain them completely, discarding all the cooking water.
Add the drained noodles directly into the skillet with the sauce. Toss well to coat the noodles evenly.
Transfer the saucy noodles to a bowl.
Garnish with chopped green onions, if desired, and serve immediately.
Store leftover sauce in an airtight container refrigerated for up to 3 days. Noodles are best served fresh; if storing cooked noodles, keep separate from sauce and reheat noodles in boiling water, then combine with warmed sauce.
Yes. Prepare the butter, brown sugar, soy sauce, and garlic sauce up to 2 days ahead and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat gently before tossing with hot noodles.
Light brown sugar dissolves smoothly into the sauce. Dark brown sugar will work but imparts a deeper molasses flavor. Avoid packed brown sugar lumps by breaking them up before measuring.
Start with a pinch of red pepper flakes and add gradually to taste. For milder heat, omit entirely; for more heat, add up to 1/2 teaspoon.
Yes. Double all sauce ingredients (2 tbsp butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 6 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp garlic) and cook two packages of ramen separately, then combine with sauce.
Stir in a beaten egg during the last 30 seconds of cooking, add sliced cooked chicken, tofu, or vegetables like bok choy or mushrooms before serving.
