Stir with ice and strain into cocktail glass.
mixing glass or bar pitcher · bar spoon · cocktail strainer · coupe or martini glass
Use a smooth, lighter Scotch (Speyside or Lowland preferred) rather than heavily peated varieties, which can overpower the vermouths' delicate flavors.
Stir it with ice for 30 seconds, then strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass to preserve the drink's silky texture.
Orange bitters are essential to the classic recipe; they add brightness and balance. Omitting them shifts the drink's character significantly.
Fill the glass with ice water while you stir the cocktail, then discard the water and strain the drink into the pre-chilled glass.
Seal both bottles tightly and refrigerate after opening; vermouth oxidizes quickly and stays fresh for 1–2 months in the fridge.
