Triple sec provides orange flavor and sweetness balance; Cointreau or other orange liqueurs work as direct substitutes, though the profile may shift slightly.
Shake vigorously with ice to chill and combine the lemon, sugar, and spirits evenly, then strain into a coupe or cocktail glass.
Use a bar spoon or measuring spoon for accuracy; dissolve it briefly with a small amount of lemon juice before shaking to prevent grittiness.
A chilled coupe or cocktail glass is traditional; a rocks glass with ice is also acceptable depending on your serving preference.
