In a large pot over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
Add the diced onion to the pot with the beef and cook for about 3 minutes, until the onions become translucent.
Stir in the tomato paste, chili beans, chili powder, ground cumin, salt, onion powder, black pepper, red pepper flakes, brown sugar, minced garlic, and diced jalapeño.
Add the tomato sauce, drained diced tomatoes, and beef broth. Stir everything together to combine.
Bring the chili to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.
While the chili simmers, cook the hot dogs by boiling them in a pot of water until heated through.
Towards the end of the chili's simmer time, preheat your oven to 425°F.
Place small pieces of butter inside the hot dog buns. Arrange them on a baking sheet and toast in the preheated oven for 5 minutes.
To assemble, place a cooked hot dog in a toasted bun and top with a generous amount of chili.
Garnish with shredded cheddar cheese, mustard, ketchup, diced onions, and pickles as desired.
