Tips & Notes

Pro tips

Chill your coupe glass beforehand for better temperature retention and mouthfeel
Use fresh lemon juice only—bottled juice will dull the bright citrus character
Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds to properly chill and combine the three spirits
Measure precisely: the 1:1:1 brandy ratio is critical to the drink's balance

Substitutions

Apple Brandy → Calvados (richer apple character, higher proof)
Triple Sec → Cointreau (drier, less sweet)
Old Mr. Boston Five Star Brandy → Cognac VSOP (smoother, more refined)

Equipment

cocktail shaker · jigger · coupe or cocktail glass · bar strainer

Common Questions

What type of brandy works best in a Deauville cocktail?

Use a quality cognac or other dry brandy for the base. Apple brandy adds a subtle fruit note; Calvados is a traditional choice.

Should a Deauville cocktail be shaken or stirred?

Shake with ice and strain into a coupe or cocktail glass to properly chill and integrate the ingredients.

Can I make a Deauville cocktail without triple sec?

Triple sec provides essential orange flavor and sweetness balance. Cointreau or Curaçao are similar substitutes, but the drink will taste noticeably different without it.
