Tips & Notes

Pro tips

Measure the pineapple juice and grenadine precisely using a bar spoon—1 teaspoon each is critical for balance and prevents the drink from becoming too sweet.
Squeeze fresh lime juice immediately before mixing; bottled lime juice will dull the citrus sharpness central to this cocktail's character.
Chill your glass beforehand or fill it with ice while you prepare the drink; this maintains proper serving temperature.
Strain immediately after shaking to avoid over-dilution and preserve the intended texture and flavor intensity.

Substitutions

Old Mr. Boston Rum → any quality light or white rum (Bacardi, Havana Club, Don Q)
Fresh lime juice → bottled unsweetened lime juice (1:1 ratio, though flavor will be less vibrant)
Grenadine → pomegranate syrup (reduces sweetness slightly; use 1 tsp)

Equipment

cocktail shaker · bar spoon · jigger or measuring spoon · fine mesh strainer · coupe or cocktail glass

Common Questions

What type of rum works best for El Presidente Cocktail No. 1?

The recipe calls for Old Mr. Boston Rum or a comparable light/white rum. Light rums provide a clean, neutral base that won't overpower the citrus and pineapple notes.

Should this cocktail be shaken or stirred?

Shake with ice to properly chill and combine the juices, grenadine, and rum. Straining over fresh ice in a coupe or cocktail glass ensures proper dilution and temperature.

Can I make El Presidente Cocktail No. 1 in advance?

Mix individual drinks to order for best results. Pre-batching is not recommended as citrus juice oxidizes and dilution becomes uneven over time.

What is the difference between fresh pineapple juice and bottled?

Fresh pineapple juice offers brighter, more complex flavor; bottled is convenient and consistent. Use unsweetened bottled juice if fresh is unavailable.
