Tips & Notes

Pro tips

Measure precisely: the 1:1 gin-to-vermouth ratio is crucial for balance; use a jigger to avoid overshooting.
Stir (don't shake) with ice for 10–15 seconds until well-chilled; shaking aerates and clouds the drink unnecessarily.
Squeeze citrus fresh over ice to release oils; avoid bottled juice, which lacks brightness and aromatics.
Strain twice: once through a bar strainer, then through fine mesh to catch any ice chips for a clean serve.

Substitutions

Dry Vermouth → Blanc/white vermouth (adds herbal sweetness; use same measure)
Grapefruit or Lemon Juice → Lime juice (use 1/2 tsp, slightly more assertive)
Maraschino → Cherry liqueur or Luxardo maraschino syrup (1/4 tsp; adds depth)

Storage & make-ahead

Serve immediately after stirring and straining. Pre-batched cocktails can be refrigerated up to 2 hours before adding fresh citrus juice and serving.

Common Questions

What's the difference between the Ideal and a Martini?

The Ideal includes maraschino liqueur and citrus juice, making it sweeter and more aromatic than a dry Martini, which is just gin and vermouth.

Should I use fresh lemon or grapefruit juice?

Fresh juice is essential. Lemon is traditional and more tart; grapefruit adds body and slight bitterness. Choose based on your preference.

Do I need to chill the glass?

Yes. Pre-chill your coupe or cocktail glass with ice or by chilling in the freezer for 5 minutes before serving.

Can I batch this cocktail ahead?

Yes, mix and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 hours before serving, but add fresh citrus juice just before serving for best flavor.

What type of gin works best?

A London Dry style gin is traditional. Choose one with botanical complexity but avoid heavily flavored gins that compete with the vermouth and maraschino.
