Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Place the sliced red onion in the bottom of a baking dish.
In a small bowl, combine the garlic powder, dried parsley, black pepper, salt, and ranch seasoning packet to create a spice blend.
Sprinkle about half of the spice blend over the onions, drizzle with about 1 tablespoon of olive oil, and toss to coat.
Arrange the chicken thighs skin-side up on top of the seasoned onions.
Sprinkle the remaining spice blend over the chicken and drizzle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
Bake for 30 minutes, or until the chicken skin is golden and starting to crisp.
While the chicken is baking, prepare the sauce. In a measuring cup or small bowl, whisk together the barbecue sauce, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar.
