Stir with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass.
cocktail shaker · bar spoon or mixing spoon · jigger · lighter or match (for flaming orange twist)
A Prohibition-era cocktail combining 2 oz rye whiskey, 3/4 oz maraschino liqueur, 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice, and orange bitters, served with a flamed orange twist garnish.
Squeeze the citrus oils from an orange peel over a lit match or flame held near the drink's surface, then drop the peel into the glass as garnish to add smoky aroma.
Maraschino is key to the drink's character, but dry vermouth can substitute if necessary, though the flavor profile will shift toward herbal rather than sweet almond notes.
A straight rye whiskey (minimum 2 years aging) with a spice-forward profile works best; higher-proof bottlings (100+ proof) balance the sweetness of the maraschino.
Shake with ice and strain into a coupe or cocktail glass to properly integrate the citrus juice and chill the drink evenly.
