Apple Brandy Rickey

Pro tips

• Squeeze fresh lime juice immediately before mixing; oxidation dulls flavor within 15 minutes.
• Use ice to chill the glass first, then add ingredients to avoid excessive dilution from melting ice.
• Top with carbonated water last and stir gently to preserve fizz.
• Serve immediately after mixing to enjoy maximum carbonation and freshness.

Substitutions

• Apple Brandy → Calvados (French apple brandy, more refined complexity)
• Carbonated Water → Club Soda (identical result, slightly different mineral content)
• Lime Juice → Lemon Juice (brightens differently, less tropical note)

Storage & make-ahead

This is a served-fresh cocktail; do not store made drinks. Pre-mix brandy and lime juice up to 4 hours ahead in a sealed container.

What type of apple brandy works best for this cocktail?

Use a quality apple brandy or applejack with smooth, balanced flavor. Avoid flavored or sweetened varieties; the drink relies on the spirit's natural apple character.

Can I make this drink ahead of time?

Mix the apple brandy and lime juice in advance, but add carbonated water only when serving to preserve carbonation.

What's the best way to chill this cocktail?

Serve over ice in a tall glass. Pre-chill the glass or add ice first to keep the drink cold without diluting it too quickly.

What can I substitute for apple brandy?

Calvados (French apple brandy) is an excellent substitute. Bourbon or rye whiskey will change the character but work in a pinch.

Is fresh lime juice essential?

Yes—fresh lime juice is critical for balance and brightness. Bottled lime juice lacks the complexity and acidity needed for this drink.
