London Dry style gin is traditional; Mr. Boston Gin or similar affordable, juniper-forward gins work well. Avoid heavily botanical or contemporary gins that may overpower the vermouth.
Stir this cocktail with ice in a mixing glass, then strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass. Stirring maintains the spirit-forward character without excess dilution.
Bitters add depth and balance. Omitting them creates a flat drink; Angostura or other aromatic bitters are strongly recommended and should not be skipped.
The standard ratio is 1.5 oz gin to 0.75 oz sweet vermouth with 2 dashes of bitters. Adjust vermouth slightly lower if you prefer a drier cocktail.
Stir for 20–30 seconds until the mixing glass is frosted and the drink is properly chilled and diluted.
