Tips & Notes

Pro tips

Use heat-resistant bar glasses or mugs rated for boiling liquid to prevent cracking or breakage.
Pour the whiskey and boiling water slowly to control the flame intensity if flaming; the blue color indicates proper alcohol ignition.
Rim the glass with powdered sugar before pouring for better flavor distribution and presentation.
Allow the drink to cool slightly before sipping to avoid mouth burns from the boiling water base.

Substitutions

Old Mr. Boston Whiskey → bourbon, rye, or blended whiskey (flavor intensity and smokiness will vary)
Powdered Sugar → honey or simple syrup (adds sweetness without granule texture)

Equipment

heat-resistant bar glasses or mugs · bar spoon for stirring

Common Questions

Why is it called a Blue Blazer?

The drink gets its name from the blue flame that appears when the whiskey ignites during the traditional pouring and flaming technique.

Is the Blue Blazer safe to make at home?
