Tips & Notes

Pro tips

Use high-proof whiskey (80 proof minimum) for reliable ignition; Old Thompson at standard proof may require careful flame management.
Warm both metal mugs before pouring to prevent thermal shock and maintain the drink temperature.
Pour the flaming liquid in a controlled stream between mugs to create the dramatic effect—practice the motion before attempting with fire.
Extinguish the flame by covering the mug with a bar spoon before serving; do not drink while actively flaming.

Substitutions

Old Thompson Blended Whiskey → any 80+ proof blended whiskey (adjusts flame intensity slightly)

Equipment

two metal mugs or heat-safe cocktail vessels · bar spoon · lighter or long match

Common Questions

Is the Blue Blazer safe to make at home?

The Blue Blazer involves open flame and hot liquids. Use caution, work over a heat-safe surface, keep hair and loose clothing away, and have water nearby. Not recommended for inexperienced bartenders.

Why is it called a Blue Blazer?

The drink gets its name from the blue flame created when igniting the whiskey over boiling water, a signature visual element of this classic cocktail.
