Tips & Notes
Pro tips
Stir the powdered sugar with boiling water first to fully dissolve it before adding whiskey; lumpy sugar won't incorporate properly.
Chill your serving glass briefly before pouring to help maintain warmth longer.
Express lemon peel oils over the drink's surface by twisting it, then drop it in as garnish for authentic citrus aroma.
Substitutions
Old Mr. Boston Whiskey → bourbon or rye whiskey (adds more robust spice notes)
What type of whiskey works best for a Blue Blazer?
Any straight whiskey works, but bourbon or rye are traditional choices. The recipe calls for Old Mr. Boston Whiskey, a neutral blended whiskey that doesn't overpower the drink.
Can I make a Blue Blazer ahead of time?
No—this is a drink meant to be prepared and served immediately. The boiling water cools quickly, so make it just before serving.
Is a Blue Blazer safe to drink hot?
Yes, but let it cool slightly before drinking. The boiling water cools as you stir in the sugar and whiskey; it will be warm, not scalding, when ready to serve.
Can I substitute honey or simple syrup for powdered sugar?
Simple syrup dissolves instantly, making it easier to work with; use 1 teaspoon. Honey adds a different flavor profile but works if you prefer it.
