Brandy Blazer Cocktail Recipe

Pro tips

• Use a long match or kitchen torch; ignite the brandy fumes just above the liquid surface, not the liquid itself, for a controlled flame.
• Warm the glass beforehand with hot water; this stabilizes the drink temperature and prevents thermal shock.
• Express the citrus peels over the flame to release oils into the heat before dropping them in—this amplifies the aroma.
• Extinguish the flame by covering the glass briefly or blowing gently; never pour flaming liquid.

Substitutions

• Old Mr. Boston Five Star Brandy → any VS or VSOP brandy or cognac (proof and flavor profile similar)
• Sugar lump → 1 tsp simple syrup or 1 tsp granulated sugar (dissolves faster, less dramatic)
• Orange + Lemon peel → grapefruit or lime peel (citrus character shifts but technique unchanged)

Storage & make-ahead

Brandy Blazer is prepared fresh to order and consumed immediately; no storage required.

Equipment

long match or kitchen torch · heat-safe glass or mug

What does flaming the brandy do?

Flaming caramelizes the sugar, deepens the brandy's flavor, and creates the signature warm, aromatic experience. The flame is extinguished before serving.

Is this drink served hot or at room temperature?

Brandy Blazer is served warm from the flaming process, but not piping hot. The initial flame warms the mixture and is extinguished before drinking.

Can I make this without flaming it?

Yes. Stir the sugar with brandy and warm citrus peels gently over low heat instead. You'll lose the theatrical element and some caramelization depth, but the drink remains drinkable.

Which brandy works best?

Old Mr. Boston Five Star Brandy is traditional, but any mid-range brandy (VS or VSOP grade, 80+ proof) works. Avoid top-shelf cognacs, as the flame process wastes their nuance.
