Tips & Notes

Pro tips

Use fresh-squeezed lemon juice—bottled will dull the cocktail's bright, balanced profile.
Shake vigorously with ice for 10-12 seconds to properly chill and dilute the drink, creating a silky texture.
Serve in a chilled coupe or cocktail glass; pre-chill glassware in the freezer for 5 minutes before serving.
Pour equal parts of each spirit (1 oz each) for the classic balance; adjust lemon juice upward if you prefer a drier cocktail.

Substitutions

Sloe gin → blackberry liqueur or crème de cassis (flavor will shift toward dark berries)
Apricot brandy → peach schnapps or apricot liqueur (slight viscosity difference)
Mr. Boston brands → any quality gin, brandy, and apricot-flavored brandy (taste profile may vary)

Equipment

cocktail shaker · jigger · bar strainer · coupe or cocktail glass

Common Questions

Can I make a Charlie Chaplin without sloe gin?

Sloe gin is essential to the drink's character. Substitute with blackberry liqueur or crème de cassis if unavailable, though the flavor will differ.

Should this cocktail be served chilled?

Yes. Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass for optimal temperature and mouthfeel.

What type of lemon juice works best?

Always use fresh-squeezed lemon juice, never bottled. Fresh juice delivers the bright acidity needed to balance the sweet liqueurs.

Is this cocktail sweet?

Moderately sweet due to the brandy and sloe gin, but the lemon juice provides sufficient tartness for balance. Adjust lemon to taste if preferred drier.
