Why steam the carrots first instead of baking raw?
Steaming softens the carrots so they can be flattened and will crisp up evenly in the oven. Raw carrots would remain hard and chewy after baking.
How do you know when they're done baking?
Bake until the edges are deeply golden and the Parmesan is lightly browned, usually 15–20 minutes at 400°F. They'll crisp further as they cool.
Can you make these ahead?
Yes. Store cooled chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 5 minutes to restore crispness.
What if your carrots are large instead of baby carrots?
Cut large carrots into ½-inch-thick rounds before steaming so they soften evenly and are easier to flatten and bake.
Does the ranch seasoning have to be store-bought?
No. Mix dried dill, parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper as a homemade substitute for store-bought ranch seasoning.
