Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
Add the shredded hash browns to the skillet, spreading them into an even layer. Use a spatula to press them down firmly.
Cook undisturbed for 15-20 minutes, until the bottom is golden brown and the edges are crispy.
Season the top of the hash browns generously with salt and pepper, then drizzle with vegetable oil.
Carefully flip the hash brown patty. You can slide it onto a cutting board and then invert the pan over it to flip it back into the skillet.
Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter around the edges of the hash browns, allowing it to melt and crisp up the sides.
Cook for another 10-15 minutes until the second side is deeply golden brown and crispy.
Slide the hash brown patty onto a cutting board, cut in half, and serve immediately with your favorite toppings like fried eggs and avocado.
