Tips & Notes

Pro tips

Squeeze lemon juice fresh just before mixing—bottled lemon juice dulls the cocktail's brightness.
Chill your coupe or cocktail glass beforehand; a cold glass keeps the drink crisp longer.
Measure precisely: this 1:1:1:0.5 ratio is delicate. Use a jigger to avoid overpowering the balance.
Strain through fine mesh if ice shards form; a clean pour improves presentation.

Substitutions

Apple Brandy → Pisco or dry white wine (reduces apple character, increases dryness)
Triple Sec → Cointreau or Curaçao (maintains citrus profile with different complexity)

Equipment

cocktail shaker · jigger · strainer · coupe glass or cocktail glass

Common Questions

What's the difference between brandy and apple brandy in this cocktail?

Brandy is distilled from wine, while apple brandy (Calvados) is distilled from apple cider. Apple brandy adds fruity sweetness that softens the cocktail's overall profile.

Should the Deauville be shaken or stirred?

Shake with ice for 10–15 seconds to chill and dilute slightly, then strain into a coupe or cocktail glass.

Can I make a batch ahead for a party?

Pre-batch the liquid ingredients (brandy, apple brandy, triple sec, lemon juice) in a bottle, then shake with ice and serve. Prepare no more than 2 hours ahead for best flavor.
