Use a mid-range bourbon with 80–100 proof for balanced flavor; avoid overly high-proof or young bourbons that can overpower the Benedictine's delicate herbal character.
This cocktail is best served fresh over ice. Mixing more than 30 seconds before serving can dilute the drink and mute the herbal notes.
Benedictine adds herbal complexity and subtle sweetness that rounds out the bourbon's spice, creating a more nuanced flavor profile than bourbon alone.
Cut a 2-inch strip of lemon peel, twist it over the drink to release oils into the surface, then drop it in or use as a garnish for aromatics and citrus flavor.
