Bring a pot of water to a boil.
Carefully lower the eggs into the boiling water and cook for exactly 5 minutes for a perfectly runny yolk.
Once the timer is up, immediately transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.
While the eggs cook, generously butter the slices of bread.
Toast the buttered bread until golden and crispy.
Cut the toasted bread into long strips to create the 'soldiers'.
Place the cooked eggs in egg cups. Use an egg cracker tool or a knife to carefully remove the top of each egg shell.
Season the exposed egg yolks with salt and pepper.
Serve immediately, dipping the toast soldiers into the runny egg yolks.
