Blended whiskey is traditional, but bourbon or rye also work well. Choose a mid-range spirit you'd drink neat—it's the star of the drink.
Stir, don't shake. Stirring chills and dilutes the drink gently without aerating it or diluting too quickly.
Mix the sugar and bitters in the glass ahead of time, but add whiskey and ice just before serving to preserve freshness and chill.
The lemon twist releases citrus oils over the drink for aroma and flavor, then is dropped in or used as a garnish.
One teaspoon is a starting point; adjust based on how diluted you prefer your drink and the size of your ice.
