Quaalude Cocktail (Vodka Hazelnut Coffee Liqueur)

Pro tips

• Chill your glass beforehand to keep the drink cold longer and prevent the milk from curdling when combined with alcohol.
• Pour liqueurs first, then add milk last—this creates visible layering and prevents separation.
• Use fresh milk or cream; older milk may curdle slightly when mixed with high-alcohol ingredients.
• Stir gently after adding milk to blend flavors without over-aerating, which can dull the creamy texture.

Substitutions

• Coffee liqueur → Irish cream liqueur (e.g., Baileys for a sweeter, less coffee-forward drink)
• Hazelnut liqueur → almond liqueur or amaretto (changes the nut profile; keep ratio the same)
• Milk → heavy cream or half-and-half (richer mouthfeel and sweeter taste)
• Vodka → rum or whiskey (adds depth; choose a neutral spirit to avoid competing flavors)

Storage & make-ahead

Cocktails are best consumed immediately after mixing. Prepare the three liqueurs in advance in a sealed container (up to 24 hours); add milk and ice just before serving.

Equipment

cocktail shaker or mixing glass · jigger (1 oz measure) · bar spoon or stirring rod

Can I make this without milk?

Yes. Omit the milk for a stronger, less creamy cocktail, or substitute cream or half-and-half for a richer texture.

What hazelnut liqueur works best?

Frangelico is the most common choice, but any hazelnut liqueur will work. Adjust the ratio based on sweetness preference.

Should this be served hot or cold?

Serve over ice for a chilled cocktail, or warm the mixture gently for a hot version—add hot water instead of milk if warming.

Can I batch this for a group?

Yes. Multiply the proportions and mix in a pitcher. Store in the refrigerator up to 24 hours; stir before serving.

What coffee liqueur brand works best?

Kahlúa is the standard choice, but any coffee liqueur will work. Taste and adjust ratios to balance coffee and hazelnut.
