Tips & Notes

Pro tips

Chill your glass with ice before pouring to keep the drink cold and dilute it minimally.
Dash the bitters last—a few drops go a long way; start with one dash and add more to taste.
Use quality sloe gin; the fruit flavor is the hero of this simple drink.
Stir gently with ice if adding water or dilution, rather than shaking, to preserve the spirit's smoothness.

Substitutions

Old Mr. Boston Sloe Gin → any quality sloe gin (Plymouth, Bulldog, or homemade variations work)
Aromatic Bitters → orange bitters or chocolate bitters (alters flavor profile slightly)

Common Questions

What is sloe gin?

Sloe gin is a liqueur made by infusing sloes (blackthorn berries) with gin and sugar, resulting in a sweet, fruity spirit with deep color and plum-like notes.

Can I make this cocktail without bitters?

Yes, you can omit the bitters, but they add depth and balance to the sweetness of the sloe gin. Consider them optional but recommended.

What type of bitters work best?

Aromatic or Angostura bitters are traditional choices that complement the fruit character of sloe gin.

How should this cocktail be served?

Serve chilled, either over ice in a rocks glass or as a short, spirit-forward pour. A garnish of lemon twist or fresh sloe berry (if available) enhances presentation.
