Artillery Cocktail (Classic Gin Vermouth)

Pro tips

• Pre-chill your glass with ice water before pouring to keep the cocktail cold longer.
• Stir for exactly 30 seconds—over-stirring dilutes; under-stirring leaves it warm.
• Use a bar spoon with a long handle to reach the bottom of the glass and ensure even chilling.
• Fresh Angostura bitters make a noticeable difference; old or stale bitters mute the aromatics.

Substitutions

• Old Mr. Boston Dry Gin → other London dry gins like Tanqueray or Bols (maintains the dry profile)
• Sweet Vermouth → dry vermouth (creates a drier, less sweet drink)
• Angostura Bitters → orange bitters or Peychaud's (alters the spice and citrus balance)

Equipment

bar spoon · cocktail shaker or mixing glass · jigger or shot glass for measuring · strainer

Should this cocktail be stirred or shaken?

Stir gently with ice for 30 seconds to chill and slightly dilute without aerating, which preserves the smooth flavor profile.

Can I substitute the sweet vermouth?

Yes—dry vermouth creates a drier drink, or try Italian vermouth varieties for different botanical notes.

What glassware works best?

A coupe or cocktail glass chilled with ice beforehand will keep the drink cold longer.

How much ice should I use?

Use one large cube or several smaller ones; more surface area melts faster and over-dilutes the drink.

What's a good garnish?

A lemon twist or cocktail cherry complements the vermouth and bitters without overpowering the gin.
