Slice a section from a loaf of Italian bread and then slice it in half lengthwise to create two pieces for the sandwich.
Heat a grill pan and drizzle with olive oil. Place the bread slices cut-side down on the pan.
Drizzle the top of the bread with more olive oil and grill until golden brown and toasted, using a grill press for even cooking.
Remove the bread and place the prosciutto slices on the hot grill pan. Cook until crispy, about 30-60 seconds per side.
To assemble, spread fig jam evenly on the inside of one slice of toasted bread.
Layer with caramelized onions, followed by a layer of crispy prosciutto.
Break apart the burrata cheese and spoon it over the prosciutto.
Add another layer of crispy prosciutto and caramelized onions.
Top with the second slice of bread, press down gently, and serve immediately.
Best eaten fresh, but store leftovers wrapped in foil in the refrigerator for up to 1 day; reheat gently in a skillet over medium heat.
Yes. Caramelize onions up to 3 days ahead and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat gently in a pan before assembling.
Use medium heat and butter the bread lightly. Toast 2–3 minutes per side until golden; the residual heat will melt the burrata without charring.
Yes. Use fresh mozzarella, ricotta, or creamy goat cheese. Burrata melts best, but softer cheeses work if you prefer a creamier interior.
No, this recipe contains prosciutto. Omit it for a vegetarian version, or substitute with crispy pancetta or mushrooms for umami depth.
Yes. Prepare components (caramelized onions, fig spread) in bulk, then assemble and cook each sandwich individually to keep bread crispy.
