Tips & Notes

Pro tips

Cut strawberries into halves just before mixing to preserve juice and prevent oxidation.
Chill your glass beforehand; a cold glass keeps the drink properly chilled without excessive dilution from melting ice.
Measure precisely—the balance of vanilla liqueur and triple sec to bourbon is key; too much sweetness masks the whiskey character.
Muddle strawberries gently if building in the glass; crushing too hard releases bitter seeds and pulp.

Substitutions

Vanilla liqueur → Vanilla syrup (use 0.5 oz for richness without alcohol heat)
Triple Sec → Cointreau (higher quality orange liqueur, smoother finish)
Bourbon → Rye whiskey (spicier profile, drier finish)
Fresh strawberries → Strawberry puree or liqueur (less texture, more concentrated fruit)

Storage & make-ahead

This is a fresh cocktail best served immediately after preparation. Do not store mixed cocktails; prepare individual drinks to order.

Common Questions

Can I make this cocktail without fresh strawberries?

Fresh strawberries are essential to the drink's flavor. Use ripe berries at peak season for best results; frozen strawberries are a less ideal substitute.

What bourbon works best for this cocktail?

A mid-range bourbon (80–100 proof) works well. Avoid very high-proof bourbons that will overpower the vanilla and fruit notes.

How should I chill this drink?

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled glass, or stir with ice and serve up. Both methods work; shaking aerates the strawberry flavors.

What glassware is best?

Serve in a coupe, martini glass, or rocks glass over ice, depending on your preference for presentation and temperature retention.

Can I batch this for a party?

Yes. Mix bourbon, vanilla liqueur, and triple sec in a pitcher; add fresh strawberries and chill. Shake with ice and strain per serving, or serve over ice.
