Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs

Open a hot dog bun so it lies flat, but do not separate the two halves.

Use a rolling pin to flatten the bun.

Spread softened butter evenly over the outside (top) surface of the flattened bun.

Slice the hot dog lengthwise (butterfly it), being careful not to cut all the way through.

Place the buttered bun, butter-side down, onto a preheated griddle or large skillet over medium heat.

Sprinkle about half of the shredded cheese onto the inside of the bun on the griddle.

Place the butterflied hot dog on the griddle to cook alongside the bun.

Once the hot dog is heated through, place it on top of the cheese on the bun.

Top the hot dog with the remaining shredded cheese.

Fold the other half of the bun over to close the sandwich.

Continue to grill, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the bun is golden brown and crispy and the cheese is fully melted.

Remove from the griddle, slice in half if desired, and serve immediately with ketchup and mustard for dipping.
