Orangeade (Homemade Orange Juice)

Pro tips

• Roll oranges firmly on the counter before cutting and juicing — this breaks down internal membranes and releases more juice.
• Juice at room temperature rather than cold oranges; they yield significantly more liquid.
• Strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve if you prefer a smooth texture without pulp.
• Add powdered sugar gradually and stir well; it dissolves better than granulated sugar in cold juice.

Substitutions

• Powdered sugar → honey or agave nectar (adds mild sweetness; stir well to combine)
• Powdered sugar → skip entirely (works if oranges are naturally sweet)

Storage & make-ahead

Store fresh-squeezed orange juice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; drink within 24 hours for best flavor and nutritional value.

Equipment

citrus juicer or manual reamer · fine-mesh strainer (optional, for pulp removal)

What type of oranges work best for juicing?

Valencia and blood oranges are ideal for juicing because they yield more liquid and have good flavor. Avoid thick-skinned varieties like navels when possible.

Do I need to add powdered sugar?

No. Add powdered sugar only if your oranges are particularly tart or if you prefer sweeter juice. Ripe oranges are naturally sweet enough on their own.

How long does homemade orange juice stay fresh?

Fresh-squeezed orange juice lasts 3–4 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Drink it within 24 hours for peak flavor and vitamin C content.

Can I make this juice ahead of time?

Yes, but juice tastes best consumed within a few hours of squeezing. If making ahead, store in an airtight, opaque container to slow oxidation.

What equipment do I need to juice oranges?

A manual citrus juicer, electric juicer, or even a handheld reamer works. A fine-mesh strainer helps remove pulp if you prefer smooth juice.
