To a cocktail shaker with 1 cup ice, add whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters and stir for a few seconds to chill. Strain into cocktail glass.
Rub the zest around the rim of the glass, roll it up and give it a squeeze, then drop it into the drink and add the cherries.
Cocktails are best consumed immediately after preparation; do not store mixed drinks.

Wheat whiskey is softer and smoother than rye, with a slightly sweeter profile. This version uses wheat whiskey (such as Bernheim or Dry Fly) for a more mellow, approachable drink.
You can pre-batch the whiskey, vermouth, and bitters in a pitcher and chill it, then stir with ice and strain into glasses just before serving. Add the zest and cherries at the last moment for freshness.
Stirring gently chills the drink while keeping it silky-smooth and clear; shaking aerates it and can create unwanted cloudiness in a spirit-forward cocktail like this.
Fresh mandarin, clementine, or tangerine zest adds bright citrus notes. Express the oils over the drink by squeezing the strip before dropping it in for maximum flavor.
Italian vermouth (like Martini Rosso) is the closest match. Avoid dry vermouth, which will make the drink too sharp.
