Americano Cocktail (Campari And Sweet Vermouth)

Pro tips

• Chill your glass with ice before pouring to keep the drink colder longer.
• Use a 1:1:1 ratio of Campari to sweet vermouth to carbonated water for ideal balance; adjust carbonation to taste.
• Stir gently after adding carbonated water to maintain bubbles and blend flavors without over-mixing.
• Serve immediately after adding carbonated water—the drink loses effervescence quickly.

Substitutions

• Sweet vermouth → dry vermouth (creates a drier, more bitter aperitif)
• Carbonated water → Prosecco or dry sparkling wine (transforms into a wine-based aperitivo)
• Campari → Aperol (mellower, slightly sweeter alternative with lower alcohol)

Storage & make-ahead

The unmixed Campari and sweet vermouth keep indefinitely in a cool, dark cabinet. Mix fresh with carbonated water each time for optimal carbonation.

What kind of sweet vermouth should I use?

Any Italian or French sweet (red) vermouth works well—Martini & Rossi, Noilly Prat Rouge, or Carpano are common choices. Stick to one brand for consistency.

Can I make this ahead?

Mix the Campari and sweet vermouth in advance, but add carbonated water and ice just before serving to keep it bubbly.

What type of carbonated water should I use?

Plain soda water or club soda works best; avoid tonic water or flavored seltzers, which will alter the balance.

How should I serve this cocktail?

Pour over ice in a rocks glass, top with carbonated water, and stir gently. Garnish with an orange twist or cherry if desired.

Is this cocktail bitter or sweet?

It's balanced between both—Campari brings bitterness and herbal notes, while sweet vermouth adds warmth and sweetness.
