Muddle basil leaves in mixing glass.
Shake with remaining
ingredients and ice.
Strain into chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with
basil leaf.
Cynar is central to the flavor profile, but dry vermouth or Fernet-Branca can approximate its herbal-bitter notes in a pinch.
Gently tear the basil leaves to release oils without over-bruising, which can turn them bitter. Stir gently rather than muddle.
Slap the small basil leaf between your palms to express oils, then float it on top or rest it against the glass rim.
A coupe, Nick & Nora, or rocks glass works well; serve chilled, up or over ice depending on preference.
Yes—multiply all ingredients by the number of servings, stir well with ice, and strain into chilled glasses. Add basil garnish per drink.
