Warm two large, silver-plated mugs with handles with boiling water; pour out water.
Put whiskey into one mug and fresh boiling water
into other mug.
Ignite whiskey.
While whiskey flames, pour into mug with boiling water.
Repeat pouring from one mug into the other,
extending stream to a foot or so.
If done well, this will have the appearance of a continuous stream of liquid fire.
Sweeten with syrup.
Pour into preheated Irish coffee glass and add lemon twist.
This is a cocktail meant to be consumed immediately after preparation; do not store.
heat-proof metal cups or bar spoons (for flaming) · bar spoon or long spoon (for stirring and pouring if flaming)
The Blue Blazer is traditionally served flaming by pouring ignited whiskey between two metal cups for drama, whereas a hot toddy is simply a warm sweetened whiskey drink without the flame component.
The flame is the signature presentation of this drink but not essential for flavor. If you skip it, you have a straightforward hot whiskey drink; the spectacle is the Blue Blazer's defining trait.
Rye whiskey is traditional for its spicy notes, but bourbon works as a milder substitute. Avoid blended or light whiskeys that lack body.
Use actively boiling water (212°F) to properly warm the drink and support ignition of the whiskey if flaming.
Use heat-proof metal cups or vessels, keep hands clear of the flame path, work on a stable surface, and have water or a fire extinguisher nearby. Never attempt if inexperienced with fire.
