Moscow Mule Cocktail Recipe

Pro tips

• Use fresh lime juice, never bottled—the citrus acidity balances the ginger beer's sweetness and vodka's neutrality.
• Fill the mug with fresh ice cubes before building; this keeps the drink colder and dilutes less as the drink sits.
• Chill the copper mug in the freezer for 10 minutes before serving for optimal temperature retention.
• Stir gently for 5–10 seconds after adding all ingredients to marry the flavors without over-aerating.

Substitutions

• Old Mr. Boston Vodka → any neutral vodka (no flavor change)
• Ginger beer → high-quality pale ale ginger beer (slightly less spicy)
• Copper mug → glass, ceramic, or metal mug (no impact on taste)

Storage & make-ahead

Moscow Mules are best served immediately after mixing. Do not store; prepare fresh for each serving.

Equipment

copper mug (traditional) · bar spoon or long spoon (for stirring) · jigger or shot glass (for measuring)

What type of ginger beer should I use?

Use quality ginger beer with real ginger and moderate spice. Avoid ginger ale, which is too sweet and lacks bite. Popular brands include Fever-Tree and Q Ginger Beer.

Do I need a copper mug?

A copper mug is traditional and keeps the drink colder longer, but any glass or mug works. The copper enhances the experience but isn't essential.

Can I make Moscow Mules without vodka?

Yes. Substitute vodka with rum for a Dark 'n' Stormy variation, or use ginger beer and lime with soda for a non-alcoholic version.

How much fresh lime juice should I use?

Use 0.5 oz fresh lime juice (about half a lime). Fresh juice is essential—bottled lime cordial will make the drink too sweet.

Should the drink be stirred or shaken?

Build it directly in the glass over ice and stir gently to combine. No shaker needed for this simple stirred cocktail.
