The recipe calls for 2 oz Old Mr. Boston Rum and 1 oz Jamaica Rum. Jamaica rum adds a funkier, more complex flavor; substitute with other aged or dark rums if needed.
Fresh citrus and pineapple juice are essential to the flavor balance. Bottled juices will lack the brightness and complexity of fresh-squeezed juice.
Dip mint sprigs lightly in water, then roll in fine powdered sugar until coated. Prepare just before serving to prevent the sugar from dissolving.
A highball or Collins glass works well for this drink, allowing room for ice and garnish. A hurricane glass is also traditional for tropical punch cocktails.
Mix the rum, juices, and triple sec in advance without ice, then divide into glasses over ice when serving. Add garnishes fresh to preserve presentation.
