Dry gin is traditional; Old Mr. Boston Dry Gin is specified here, but any London Dry-style gin with juniper-forward botanicals works well.
Cherry brandy adds the signature flavor; substituting other fruit brandies or liqueurs will change the drink's character noticeably.
Fresh lemon juice is strongly recommended for better flavor and balance; bottled juice lacks the brightness needed for this cocktail.
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a glass filled with fresh ice for proper dilution and chill.
Simple syrup dissolves more readily in cold cocktails; use 1/2 oz simple syrup instead of powdered sugar for easier mixing.
