Tips & Notes

Pro tips

Chill all spirits and juices before layering to keep color bands distinct and prevent premature mixing.
Pour the tequila and sour mix blend very slowly over the back of a bar spoon to float it cleanly on the denser liqueurs below.
Use fresh orange juice when possible; bottled adds body and helps the layers hold longer than freshly squeezed.

Substitutions

Melon liqueur → Blue curaçao (shifts green layer to blue; use less as it's more potent)
Sloe gin → Cranberry liqueur (adds deeper red tone; slightly more bitter)

Equipment

bar spoon · jigger · highball or shot glass

Common Questions

How do you layer a Traffic Light Cooler without the layers mixing?

Pour ingredients slowly over the back of a bar spoon in order of density, starting with the heaviest (sloe gin), then melon liqueur, then tequila and citrus mix. Chill glasses first for best results.

Can you make this drink ahead of time?

Layer the drink just before serving to preserve distinct color separation. Pre-chill all ingredients and glassware to keep layers defined longer.

What type of glassware works best?

A tall highball or shooter glass shows off the layers best. Clear glass is essential to display the color bands.

Is this drink sweet or sour?

The sour mix and orange juice provide tartness balanced by the melon liqueur's sweetness and the tequila's warmth. Taste leans toward balanced citrus-forward.
