Vagabundo Cocktail (Fresh Celery Tequila)

Pro tips

• Juice celery just before making the drink; fresh celery juice oxidizes and darkens quickly, dulling the herbaceous flavor.
• Chill the glass before serving to keep the drink cold without over-diluting from excess ice melting.
• Balance is key: taste as you go — if the drink is too vegetal, add a splash more pineapple juice; if too sweet, add lime juice.
• Use fresh lime juice from hand-squeezed limes, not bottled, for brighter acidity and cleaner flavor.

Substitutions

• Reposado blanco tequila → Silver or blanco tequila (lighter, peppery taste)
• Pineapple juice → Apple juice or white cranberry juice (shifts sweetness profile)
• Fresh celery juice → Cucumber juice (milder, herbaceous alternative)

Storage & make-ahead

This cocktail is meant to be served fresh and should not be stored; prepare individual drinks to order.

Equipment

juicer or blender (for celery juice) · cocktail shaker · bar spoon or mixing glass

Can I use bottled celery juice instead of fresh?

Yes, bottled celery juice works, but fresh-pressed tastes brighter. Use the same amount (1.5 oz) and check for added sodium or preservatives.

What type of tequila should I use?

Reposado blanco tequila is specified, which offers smooth vanilla notes. Other tequilas work but may change the flavor profile.

How do I make fresh celery juice?

Use a juicer or blender: juice 3–4 celery stalks through a juicer, or blend stalks with a little water and strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh sieve.

Is this cocktail gluten-free?

Yes, all ingredients (tequila, juices, lime) are naturally gluten-free. Verify your specific brands avoid cross-contamination.

Can I batch or prep this ahead?

Mix the tequila and juices up to 4 hours ahead in a pitcher. Add ice and garnish fresh before serving to keep the celery juice vibrant.
